Research: My interests are in ways that schools have increased Hispanic student achievement. My dissertation topic is going to be along these lines. Essentially, what I want to know is whether or not school superintendents have a clue as to how to improve Hispanic student achievement.

Other: Nicolas Retana was principal of San Marcos High School, Texas which was awarded a TSSAS award for improved TAAS scores. Hispanic student achievement had the highest gain of any comparable school in Central Texas (Spring 1994). He is a recognized expert on school leadership, diversity training for teachers, and minimizing gang activity on campus. He won a fellowship in the Spring of 1995 to attend the University of Texas's prestigious Cooperative Superintendency Program. His residency is at the Texas Eduation Agency.
