Michael R. Ornelas

Department: Chicano Studies

Institution: San Diego Mesa College

Position: Professor of Chicano studies

Research: I teach courses on the Chicano historical experience from the pre-Columbian eras to the modern periods in the United States. I also teach a course on Chicanos and film. This course explores how Chicanos depict themselves in film and includes analysis of the Chicano film voice through the works of authors Chon Noriega and Rosa Linda Fregoso.

Publications: I have edited a second edition of Between the Conquests: Readings on the Early Chicano Historical Experience. This diverse collection of essays explores selected aspects of the early Chicano experience-the sixteenth through the nineteenth century Spanish, Mexican and U.S. experiences. I have also edited a text of readings entitled Beyond 1848: Readings in the Modern Chicano Historical Experience which offers interpretive essays from the middle nineteenth through the late twentieth century. Complimentary copies of these are available for educators for classroom consideration through Kendall/Hunt Publishing Co., at 1-800-228-0810.
